Dr. Isaac Golden is a well known authority in homeoprophylaxis, a homeopathic alternative to vaccines. In this interview, he provides information on the program.
AllNaturalIdeas.com spoke, via Skype, with Dr. Isaac Golden, pioneer of the modern homeopathic immunization program, better known as homeoprophylaxis, which usually involves orally administered sugar pellets and is an alternative to conventional vaccines.
Golden, a resident of the state of Victoria in Australia, in 1980, had a child who was vaccine damaged (he declined to elaborate in this interview). In 2004, he became the first person to be awarded a doctorate in homeopathy by a mainstream University in Australia, for his 20-year long research into homeopathic disease prevention. (“Prophylaxis” means: action taken to prevent disease, especially by specified means or against a specified disease.)
Golden has practiced homeopathy since 1984, and is founder and Principal of the Australasian College of Hahnemannian Homoeopath. His own research and publications can be found on his website.
Interview with Dr. Isaac Golden on Homeoprophylaxis
This interview was conducted March 10, 2016.
(NOTE: It’s important to note that the homeopathic alternative to conventional vaccines, the modern homeoprophylaxis program that Dr. Golden pioneered, is not accurate when referred to as “homeopathic vaccines.” Dr. Golden explains why in this interview….)
AllNaturalIdeas.com: If a parent is interested in homeopathic immunizations, is it important to only receive consultation from a naturopathic doctor (ND), or a doctor of homeopathy … or is a certified homeopath sufficient?
Dr. Golden: Parents should only rely on someone who has had specific training in homeopathy, so a classical certified homeopath who specializes in homeoprophylaxis is fine.
AllNaturalIdeas.com: At what age should parents start their kids on homeoprophylaxis?
Dr. Golden: If you’re thinking about delaying orthodox vaccines, it’s ok to delay them in my opinion.
But when you’re dealing with homeopathic immunization, a disease like whooping cough is most potentially serious in the first six-12 months of the child’s life. Because the homeopathic option is nontoxic and not going to stress the child, it really makes sense to give that remedy for whooping cough as early as possible and my program starts at one month. If you want to delay other ones that’s fine, but with whooping cough, in infancy, it’s potentially very serious. I don’t try to delay the others because I don’t feel there’s a real need to. If you feel very strongly that you want to delay the others then it’s not the end of the world. My program starts at one month of age and gives a different remedy every month for the first 10 months. Then there are gaps in the program every third or fourth month or so, and the program lasts for six years.
AllNaturalIdeas.com: Why is it inaccurate to call homeopathic alternatives “vaccines”?
Dr. Golden: Because in homeopathy, we don’t vaccinate. Homeoprophylaxis is not vaccines. Vaccines stimulate the antibody/antigen side of the immune system and contain a material dose, which means it has a live, attenuated or killed virus, bacteria or toxin. This is the last line of defense in the body, and it kicks in 3-4 days after a person has been exposed to a specific antigen. Homeoprophylaxis does not stimulate the antibody system. Homeopathic immunizations contain an energetic dose, which means the substances are potentized and diluted to reduce material dose, but retain the memory of the disease or disease agent.
AllNaturalIdeas.com: Many people mistake you as the inventor of homeoprophylaxis. Why are they wrong?
Dr. Golden: Homeoprophylaxis has been used since 1798. [Christian Samuel] Hahnemann [who created the alternative form of medicine known as homeopathy] used it to both treat and prevent Scarlet Fever. In terms of the program for infants and children, I designed my first one in 1985 and I’ve changed the design a little bit over the last 31 years.
AllNaturalIdeas.com: Have you faced scrutiny by the government in Australia?
Dr. Golden: I was investigated by the State government four different times, and I’m still under threat of a $27,000 fine from the TGA [Therapeutic Goods Administration] for sending remedies overseas, etc…. The government would have closed me down if I advertised the program, because I would have been making a therapeutic claim. But I have never advertised the program, so they haven’t’ been able to do anything about it on that level.
AllNaturalIdeas.com: Do you frequently come across parents who tell you their child has been injured from a vaccine?
Dr. Golden: Half of my clinic work is with autistic children and with kids who have been vaccine injured. I get referrals from all over Australia to treat children who have been vaccine damaged, and a lot of them are children who are on the spectrum. I have written a book about it, “Vaccine Damaged Children: Treatment, Prevention, Reasons.”
AllNaturalIdeas.com: Do you personally think that autism is caused by vaccines?
Dr. Golden: Sometimes. I have patients who have never been vaccinated [or immunized] and are diagnosed on the spectrum. Vaccinations are not the only cause of autism … that’s obvious. But it’s also very clear and obvious that vaccinations are one of the causes of autism. I have seen literally hundreds of cases where the child is totally normal, reaches developmental milestones, then after a particular vaccine is given, certainly the MMR vaccine after 12 months is a common trigger but it’s not always that one, the child’s whole progression reverses. In other words, they’ve had good eye contact. They’ve started to make words and interact verbally. Then all of a sudden, the eye contact, maybe two weeks after the vaccine, changes … it ceases altogether. Their language development ceases. The interaction they’ve had with people, maybe even with family suddenly ceases. They stop mixing with other children at the playground, or whatever the case may be. This is so common. I see it time after time. And so it is absolutely unambiguous to me that vaccination is one of the causes of autism.
AllNaturalIdeas.com: Can homeopathy help children with autism?
Dr. Golden: When you see that pattern that I just mentioned, yes, homeopathy can definitely play a role in helping deal with the symptoms that have led to the diagnosis with autism. Now, in that situation we just talked about when the child is absolutely normal and then after receiving vaccines, gets diagnosed on the spectrum, I don’t regard those children as autistic … I regard them as vaccine damaged. And so what homeopathy seeks to do is to treat the vaccine damage and let the body begin to heal itself.
AllNaturalIdeas.com: Why do so many skeptics fiercely deny that vaccines cause autism?
Dr. Golden: The child might start getting chronic skin disorders or become asthmatic after a vaccine or series of vaccines was given. But the majority of long-term reactions don’t occur until 6-12 months after the vaccine was given. They don’t think about the vaccine being a potential cause, because the symptoms did not start immediately right after the vaccine. That’s why we need long-term studies which look at the holistic health of fully vaccinated and unvaccinated kids, ideally between ages 5-12. Then people can know with absolute certainty the long-term safety of vaccines. Until then, it’s speculation.
AllNaturalIdeas.com: From a scientific standpoint, why are vaccines to blame for the symptoms?
Dr. Golden: All that I can tell you is that when I treat vaccine-damaged children successfully with potencies of the vaccines that are suspected [to have caused damage], the symptoms go [away]. When you make a graph of the symptoms, you’re basically saying with wisdom of hindsight, these are the symptoms that the vaccine caused. Because the only way a potency of the vaccine could work is if the vaccine itself is the cause…if it wasn’t the cause, then the potency of the vaccine wouldn’t do anything.
AllNaturalIdeas.com: Wouldn’t your desire for unbiased, long-term studies be difficult to achieve … how could you control kids’ diets, for example?
Dr. Golden: I’ve already done it as part of my doctorate research, beginning in 2000. I did a small trial run of this. You work through the primary school system. The number of unvaccinated children here in Australia in the public school system is only 4%, so you have no problem matching sex, age, lifestyle, and geographical data such as pulling data from the same school. That’s a relatively easy control, much more so than some people would like to admit.
AllNaturalIdeas.com: Are you against conventional vaccinations?
Dr. Golden: I’m not anti-vaccination. It is an established part of mainstream medicine. It’s not going to suddenly disappear. It can provide a level of protection. The problem is: is the relative weight between the level of protection they provide for certain diseases and potential side effects worth it? That’s really something—which, even though, orthodox medicine says has been clearly established—it hasn’t been, for lack of appropriate evidence.
AllNaturalIdeas.com: How does homeoprophylaxis stack up, efficacy-wise, against vaccines?
Dr. Golden: Homeopathic immunizations, or homeoprophylaxis, has been around for the same amount of time—200 years—as vaccines. We know homeoprophylaxis is not toxic. But the real question is … there’s no point of having something which is not toxic if it doesn’t work. Therefore, the real question in this whole debate should be what is the level of evidence that we have for homeoprophylaxis?
On my own website I briefly summarize the four types of evidence. If people want more detail, I’ve written books about it, and over the years, I’ve added more and more evidence in. The bottom line is that we now have evidence from governments around the world that have used homeopathic immunizations in millions of people.
So the evidence base for the effectiveness, or the relative effectiveness of homeoprophylaxis is now significant. In fact I’ve been invited next month by the Indian government to work with them and advise them on treating Japanese encephalitis and dengue fever. It’s only the countries that are dominated by “Pharma,” like America and Australia, where we never hear about this sort of evidence.
If people choose to do objective research, the evidence shows homeoprophylaxis, like orthodox vaccines, is not 100% effective. But it appears to have an effectiveness around 90% of the time, which is more than comparable to vaccines. So, therefore, people have a choice. Whichever way parents choose to go, in my own practice, I’m here to support them. Quite a few people that I see in my own practice vaccinate their kids for a whole variety of reasons, including societal pressure to vaccinate their kids, which is a reason to consider.
I’m here to support parents who vaccinate, or those who want to use homeoprophylaxis. But it all comes down to evidence and what confidence you have in the evidence-base of homeoprophylaxis. And that’s a matter of looking at the objective, published evidence that exists.
Answering other questions on homeoprophylaxis
How does homeoprophylaxis work?
Before answering the question, if you’re reading this without knowing how homeopathy, in general, works, the gist of it operates on the principle: “like cures like.” This theory was promulgated by a German doctor, Samuel Hahnemann, in the late 18th century. Hahnemann discovered if a patient had an illness, it could be cured by giving a medicine which, if given to a healthy person, would produce similar symptoms of that same illness but to a slighter degree. So, let’s say a patient was suffering from severe nausea, then the patient would be given a medicine which in a healthy person would provoke mild nausea. [Source]
Homeopathy is a holistic form of medicine. Rather than a conventional doctor spending little time with a patient analyzing symptoms, homeopathy is considered effective when administered by a classically-trained homeopath, who will meet with the patient for well over an hour, getting the whole picture of the patient (hence ‘holistic’) , i.e. diet, stress levels, and many other factors.
About 200 years ago, Hahnemann developed an immunization based on his ‘like treats like’ principle, for scarlet fever. Homeoprophylaxis, the homeopathic vaccine alternative, prevents disease through nosodes.
What are nosodes?
Nosodes are solutions of a miniscule amount of a disease, taken from the phlegm, feces, etc. of an infected person. The infected secretion is then administered in a solution of alcohol and 99 drops of water. The solution goes through several rounds of succussion—vigorous shaking of the test tube solution until only the energetic trace or ‘imprint’ of the disease remains.
This so-called ‘energetic life force’ is the reason why many conventional scientists scoff at homeoprophylaxis or nosodes. After all, how can a double-blind, randomized clinical trial be carried out on a solution that has been diluted many times to the point that a nanoparticle of the pathogen is immersed in the equivalent of an Olympic-sized pool? The challenge, then, for modern practitioners and advocates of homeopathy is to be able to explain the science of homeoprophylaxis; it is unclear, though if the theory of homeopathy will ever be able to be explained in conventional, scientific terms. This is not a reason to say that the homeopathic vaccine alternative of nosodes are ineffective.
What other differences are there between homeoprophylaxis and pharmaceutical immunizations?
Homeopathic immunizations are only given one at a time, rather than several vaccines administered at once per CDC guidelines.
Homeopathic immunizations (usually in pellet form, taken sublingually) can be administered by the parents at home after initial consultation and guidance from a qualified homeopathic practitioner.
The other major difference is that pharmaceutical vaccines, for the most part, are injected into muscle tissue (usually the thigh), whereas the homeopathic vaccine alternative to immunizations are administered orally.
This difference, homeoprophylaxis advocates, say is crucial.
Why is this difference important?
Most diseases (viruses and bacteria) are contracted through the respiratory tract, not immediately through the bloodstream. Therefore, nosodes, homeoprophylaxis advocates argue, offer a more natural response to pathogens without the introduction of the actual killed or manipulated virus directly into the bloodstream. Homeoprophylaxis advocates also point to the fact that nosodes contain none of the potentially toxic preservatives that pharmaceutical vaccines contain.
How much does homeoprophylaxis cost?
A standard homeoprophylaxis kit costs roughly $80 and provides protection against 8 diseases. However, a trained homeopath will charge for an initial consultation, so expect to pay roughly $300 when all is said and done.
Some kits are available online, but it’s best to go through an HP Supervisor that has been trained and certified in homeoprophylaxis. You can find a list of HP Supervisors by location here.
Vaccines have become a controversial topic as of late. Clearly, the controversy over vaccinations has leaped the medical realm, delving into big business, politics and beyond.
For some parents, it will be comforting to know that they have another choice other than mainstream vaccines or nothing at all. Homeoprophylaxis is the homeopathic vaccine alternative. Homeopathic immunizations have been in use for over 200 years now.
Nonetheless, in the meantime, homeoprophylaxis will continue to be scrutinized and ridiculed by mainstream scientists and the allopathic drug makers, organizations and doctors. While, the mainstream medical establishment may believe that there is no doubt that pharmaceutical vaccines are safe and extremely effective, Dr. Golden, counters:
“No comprehensive studies evaluating the long-term health of fully vaccinated and unvaccinated children have ever been published, thus long-term safety [of pharmaceutical vaccines] is unknown,” says Golden on his website, continuing, “We do not know with scientific certainty the true long-term impact of [conventional] vaccination on our complete health.”
