The growing trend of the 21st century is toward a switch to a gluten free diet. But, when a product “claims” to be gluten free, how do we know it is actually gluten free? The answer is, we really don’t.

A product may be gluten free, but what are the consequences of buying a product processed differently to be gluten free? Oftentimes, the product contains many synthetic components that can be more detrimental to your health in comparison to if you just consumed normal gluten products made by nature.

What should we use then as an alternative to flours and other synthetic products? Coconut flour. Not only does coconut flour add a flare to your dish, but the health benefits behind it are astonishing. So, be on the look out for coconut flour recipes!

Coconut flour is high in indigestible fiber which allows for healthy colon regulation. Coconut flour is also high in healthy fats, proteins, and most famously is promoted to be gluten free being low in sugar and free of wheat. Now unlike its neighbor flours in the grocery store, coconut flour is composed of 100 percent coconut flesh with zero composition of grains and wheat.

The medium chain fatty acids found in coconut flour can promote increased immune function helping you feel better and live healthier. This is because medium chain fatty acids are readily available energy for the body to use when needed.

Consumption of coconut flour also serve in regulating blood sugar levels. This has to do with the fact that coconut flour falls low on the glycemic index for food. Consequently, blood sugar levels do not spike as is the case with many other food intakes. Keeping a stable blood sugar level leaves you feeling full of energy throughout the day allowing you to push through the daily struggles of life. Maintaining a stable blood sugar level also aids in weight loss for people who are looking to lose a few pounds.

Having cardio issues?

Coconut flour has also been proven to decrease levels of “bad” cholesterol and serum triglycerides to keep the walls of your arteries open for maximum blood flow. This quality of cardio health is in part due to the soluble and insoluble fibers that are so prevalent in coconut flour.

Now that you know some of the great benefits you can get eating coconut flour, you may be wondering how to use it. When substituting coconut flour for regular wheat flour in recipes, it isn’t a one for one replacement.

Here’s some tips for using coconut flour:

  • Generally speaking, you’ll want to use only 1/4 to 1/3 cup of coconut flour to each cup of flour called for in the recipe.
  • Coconut flour is VERY absorbent which means you’ll likely need to add additional liquid to the recipe.
  • You’ll need to use more eggs when baking with coconut flour compared to wheat flour. The general rule of thumb is to use about 6 eggs for every one cup of coconut flour.
