Borax has circulated throughout households for over a decade. Learn more about Borax home uses to improve more than just your everyday laundry!

Borax has been a popular component to most households for over a hundred years. But, did you know that this substance has other key uses besides cleaning laundry? Learn more borax home uses that can better the house and waste less money on other chemicals.

Borax, otherwise known as sodium borate is a mineral and salt that dissolves easily in water. This molecular compound is not dangerous to people and is safe for the environment. Studies show it does not increase the risk for cancer. This said, let’s delve into the multiple other uses of borax!

Borax Home Uses

Sodium borate is a great agent in laundry for cleaning. This concept also applies to carpets. If you are steam cleaning your carpet mix 1/2 a cup of this compound for every one gallon of water. Your carpets will shine cleaner than ever.

You can use this white powder to clean the toilets. Stuck with grime that won’t budge? Put a cup in before you go to bed and scrape the bowl the next morning. A night soak will allow all of the buildup to loosen up for a cleaner bowl.

Shower grime can also be removed with borax. Apply a small amount of the powder to a damp sponge or paper towel and wipe down the shower surface. Watch as the grime washes away with ease.

Borax, as stated previously, is safe for the environment. But, it goes further than safe. The substances within the compound actually promote health in living plants!

Do you have any fruit trees in the house or outside? Sprinkle a cup of borax around a full tree (a few tablespoons for saplings and smaller trees) to add boron to the soil. Boron is important for strong cell wall growth which plays a vital role in fruit development. Other species in nature can benefit from borax.

Fresh cut flowers? We all love them, they add beauty and fragrance to the house. But, in short time they always yield to wilting and die an ugly death. Fix this problem by making a sodium borate solution. Two parts sodium borate for one part dry white sand will keep your flowers permanently preserved. Wilting is prevented and you are left with beautiful looking flowers.

Borox is also a great cheap and safe way to deal with pests. Especially during the cold winter months, many of us find pests using our homes for shelter. Unfortunately, to remove them we are forced to place chemicals in the confides of our home. Look no further than borox to fix this issue. Roaches and ants face no match to this substance. Just sprinkle it around the hiding and nesting places of these pests to kill them almost instantly.

Got dogs? Many of us love man’s best friend but they too bring pests to the house. The common pest? Fleas. Sprinkle borax on your dog’s resting place, carpet, or other common areas. Boric acid is released which is technically a poison. However, it is only poisonous to humans and dogs if ingested in extremely high amounts. The small amount released from borox is plenty to kill tiny fleas.

Lastly, if you have a mice problem spread the powder on the creases between the wall and floor where mice commonly roam. This will not kill mice, but will prevent them from returning to that spot. They get fussy when the powder gets on their paws.

The many borax home uses will save you money and keep stronger chemicals out of your home. Why not incorporate this useful natural product more thoroughly around the house?
